The fundamental problem isn't that they're not aware what a good study looks like. It's that they want to promote things that confirm what they want to believe.

Not just politics. Among my friends I saw lots of sharing of studies finding moderate drinking being good for you but very little sharing of studies finding even moderate drinking being bad for you.

This is true of people in general, even outside of politics. People will readily accept information that is compatible with their beliefs and resist information that challenges their beliefs. It seems that people seek comfort at the cost of truth.
