In research, both problem finding and problem solving are important. Surprisingly often, problem finding is more important than problem solving.

Also I think there’s something to the idea of merging two fields conventionally thought to be separate. Eg Von Neumann combined mathematics and his interest in poker and similar games to found the field of Game Theory, if I’m remembering correctly.
