Historically, a brilliant thing about academia was that it turned powerful ideas into public goods, by incentivizing scientists to publish research papers.

Not going to argue with the thrust o this. However I think your comment would be more powerful if you replace 'executable' with 'translatable'. In the sense that executability is a particular form of translatability. But different forms useful for different cases.

What is translatable?

Mmmm this resonates with my conversation with
@FalkLieder yesterday. We're planning a collaboration where his group does experiments on motivation with a modified version of https://complice.co , then he publishes papers while the app is live for people to use immediately! -
This seems like an obvious kind of thing to do, as it's a clear win-win-win (his group, me, and the users). I wonder why we don't hear about it happening more...

All experimental science is "executable". The question is whether the systems are or are not interactive for outside users. The big issue here is that academics are not supported to make their experiments shareable/interactive as such.

So basically you try to say that we should automate all lab activity and scientific papers should consist of replication binaries that start the automated scientists? :P

Do you think this was always true and the thing that changed is that now we have more executable forms than papers? Or that the subjects of papers are not as executable as they once were? From "wrap a wire this long around a metal rod that long" to "spin up your $12M GPUs"
