It can’t totally be the punchline. There are films which are the work of many people, and yet some pieces feel utterly personal. I suspect it’s a huge amount of work (and $) though.

This is a great perspective. In my limited time studying game design, this was one of the motto's recommended for Indie Game makers. It was always the question, welp, how am I suppose to compete w AAA incs with limited time/res. SuperMeatBoy is an example of this style :)
