Motivation is a weird thing. It can be hard to bring full force to bear on problems. “What would I do if someone paid me a billion dollars to solve this in a week?” “What would I do if my life were at stake?” “That of a loved one?” Often generate ideas v. different to our actions

It's usually unclear which problems are the absolutely right ones to solve, so we apply portfolio theory to solving problems.

With the result that we don’t solve much of anything, often. Portfolio theory only works if the ROI isn’t super-linear.
