Hey Micro peeps:: Two grad students in my lab, Chantal Guegler and Peter Culviner, developed a super easy DIY kit for rRNA depletion for RNA-seq. Works like the RiboZero kit that inexplicably stopped selling - ours is as good and way cheaper!

Researchers have discovered a new role for a mysterious metabolite, (p)ppApp, which bacteria inject into their neighbors to hinder growth and compete for limited resources. I talked to ’s lab about their newest Nature paper:

Finally, as many have said, the system depends on participation of rigorous scientists. If you are invited to serve, say yes! It is a lot of time, but it also teaches you about the process and about science. I always come away enriched by the experience.

(p)ppApp! It's real - not a typo of (p)ppGpp. Super fun collaboration with John Whitney's lab. Congrats to Sheri Ahmad and Boyuan Wang on their fabulous work!

Read this entire thread by . Walter Willett of is personally attacking those who are trying to promote evidence-based scientific review practices..apparently because they did not confirm his views on red meat. Scientific disagreement is fine, but this?

Honestly it’s insane that NIH doesn’t yet support paid parental leave for postdocs - no wonder so many women I know feel torn about doing a postdoc!

C’mon tweeps, my snarky tweet about MTAs yesterday got more action than this one about a SUPER important issue about making life better for postdocs! Please read and sign their letter!

Periodic reminder: I still hate MTAs. I'm sure some tech transfer person could tell me all the reasons they have to exist, but I think they obstruct academic research and generate a lot of annoying bureaucracy.
