I feel this is a general thing in all work. People who can't maintain positive relationships with others are unlikely to work well with others so it makes sense that they wouldn't be recommended or would even get blacklisted.

It's a shame how there are people in in the other extreme as well tho. People who are able to put up a friendly and a cooperative attitude but ultimately manipulate others for their own benefits to get work. I'd like to think people can tell when someone is like this but eh.

For vets, work history and multiple references. I take the word of someone who consistently recommends good people seriously For newcomers, an experienced interviewer helps but an employee mismatch still happens more often than it should.
