Timing / spacing is easily the most difficult thing to teach in animation.

timing. i used to completely disregard timing and spacing and just try to make things as flow-y and smooth as possible. It wasn’t until recently that I truly came to understand holds and when to use them

I wonder if you make your students do the storyboard of the sequence before they even think of opeing the 3D software?

For longer sequences I usually recommend thumbnails/storyboards. For short sequences a 3D block out is sufficient most of the time.
