I think all animators, at some point in their careers, should need to know how to rig, at least the basics, and all riggers should know a bit about animation-at least have made a few animations with their own rigs. Makes it so much easier to communicate.

Agreed. A few years ago I was adamant that I would not rig. I learned to help out at work and it has been one of the biggest boons to my career.
