Same as they did with CoD, WoW etc? They had a beta a few months before release like others games also do?
CoD WW2 was a month before release, which also feels extreme. WoW betas usually close a couple weeks before release.

Oh sure WoW tests start months before release, but stay open pretty much until the expansion launches. Sea of Thieves chose to lose any momentum from a beta test by putting it multiple months out. Odd choice.
