It's a good argument taking it all the way to life support vs. social media, and that's obviously extreme, but in your example how will companies determine that traffic hierarchy? Morals? Following their conscience?

And to what extent are companies held to a standard to ensure a high quality/speed network for all of their customers while they're busy selling off bandwidth carve outs to the highest bidder or tax-funded projects?

These days large content providers have their own network infrastructures. They don’t rely on transit ISPs like Comcast or AT&T to ensure high quality content delivery to end users
