How should developers meet the costs of AAA buy-to-play video game development and publishing?

I totally understand. In my mind I kinda see it work like Attach the micros and dlc passes to the most popular games to increase the budget for other teams.

But has the number of units sold increased enough to just break even or not enough at all? It seems like in some cases the micro transactions aren’t necessary or could of been done in a better way that may seem more acceptable....from a PR stand point.
