Games are expensive to make and run. AAA boxed games really haven't changed prices, even to match inflation/royalties. Which is also largely dictated by console manufacturers. Just selling a big AAA game for $60 is no longer enough. What's the solve?
That'll only happen when brick and mortar categorically fail to put up big numbers. Which could eventually happen. Until then digital will always be as-or-more-expensive than shelf prices for fear of pissing off Target and Walmart.

But then you see something like Steam taking up where brick-and-mortar left off. Can you succeed without it? Maybe, but your marketing budget needs X% more to overcome what Steam would naturally provide. Meanwhile you're agreeing to pay them a 30% royalty on all sales.

Also if we are talking consoles here again you run into storage issues with digital titles. Externals exist but push the cost of your machine that much higher

Yup. Sadly there is no good solution to today's situation. You can say dont buy in game extras but obviously LOTS of people do and that's why they are still in games and in more games. I really think a base price increase is needed but an increase in perceived value is needed too
