Want to hear a weird Blizzard story? We weren't allowed to refer to players as "fans." An exec had at some point realized fan is short for fanatic, and it had a slightly negative connotation. So that was it. Like a weird Disney-cast-members-can't-point kind of rule. We lived it.

Small world, similar story here where top management preferred to use « influencers » rather than « content creators ».

I feel like every entertainment company has made that exact decision at this point, and changed it 20 times over the past few years.

That’s classic. Kind of highlights the importance of continual calibration with other teams and people internally to make sure that everyone’s on the same page. Also, if it’s important it should be documented! Feels like something that was passed person to person as gospel.

This was a rule followed by, as far as I’m aware, all of Blizzard PR, marketing, CS, etc. Globally. Definitely tribal knowledge in some ways, but also very broadly enforced.

I had a boss with a prohibition on “overly casual speech” which mostly just meant we weren’t allowed to say “cool”

I would like for him to please make my kids stop referring to everything as “bomb”.

Saw a similar thing at a bank a few years ago- new top brass comes in, says things about incentive plans and we make big, weird tweaks.Years later says “hey, I don’t know why you love to do things this way, but you should change it.” “This was your idea.” “Hm. I don’t think so.”
