I never loved Ocarina. I think a lot of people love it like they love FF7 because it was their gateway into the franchise

I am shocked that not everyone agrees with me. It's almost as if people love different games for different reasons. :)

But I think my beef with both FF7 and Ocarina is they lost a lot of visual fidelity in order to go 3D. I also found them both a bit slow. There was a lot of traversal whereas FF6 and LttP were very dense in terms of the next enemy, next dungeon, next thing to do.

I enjoyed BotW (though I thought the reviews were too glowing) and I enjoyed FF7 remake a lot. In both cases the visuals now look great and deliver on 3D. A lot of the game industry went to 3D too early IMO, including games I worked on.

If nothing else I'm thankful for BotW's impact on the Assassin's Creed series. But I personally could have done with a slightly more guided experience.

Part of the magic of Zelda (for me) is needing to get e.g. the Hookshot which then unlocks all this new content for you. Because Botw was non-linear, they couldn't do that.

That really was why LttP was so great, at least to kid me. You get a new tool, understand its use, and immediately remember a room you found hours ago and couldn't get past.
