think you can hold circle and down while on a ledge to drop down
Unfortunately not. Not while hanging, just when walking up to a cliff edge. Even if the drop is low to moderate the game will often decide my character should not jump down.

It's extra annoying when you're fighting enemies on a rock or something and the game decides you can't roll or jump off.
