I think it's more that, for large publishers, supporting some additional resolutions is not that difficult. I'd be hard pressed to name a AAA title in the last few years that didn't support it.
Also simply changing the resolution is a "you must close and restart the game for these changes to take effect" popup. That alone has got to warrant a refund.
