You also get reversals if you hold your breath and blink. So I’m not sure if it’s breathing as such driving this.

I also get breath related reversals if i stabilise my head. So possibly not head motion. Given blinking also produces reversals, I’d argue for a simple ‘event-based reversal’ hypothesis. I wonder if it happens with external events, eg beeps

with both of these I can reverse the motion with saccades

Yep. Thats why I think it is an effect of respiration moving the head and eyes up and down. Definitely not respiration specific.

It's not head specific either. Any timing event does it. Try knocking somewhere or listen to a music beat!

These phenomena seem to be related to so called “rhythmic perception”: oscillations in perceptual sensibility in a frequency range (people reported 3-8Hz). Different actions, such as eye movements, have shown to be able to reset the phase of these perceptual oscillations.
