Unfortunately, polio still infects people in a few parts of the world that think Western medicine and vaccines are unsafe.
Also in Afghanistan where medical care and immunisation are hard to get during 40 years of war.

Both deseases were running across Europe, Asia & Afrika for millenia. There the population developed herd immunity, keeping the number of victims on a low level. But they killed most of the native population in the Americas and Australia, when they arrived with Europ. conquerors.
Herd immunity means the total prevention of transmission of diseases. Asia, Africa, and Europe didn't develop herd immunity; they had less fortunate populations DIE and the remaining ones were less likely to die. I don't remember the last time a vaccine had a 20% mortality rate.
Part of the problem is that people are not like small contained "herds". They drive cards and fly all over the world. Even so in a smaller country like Sweden "herd immunity" DID NOT WORK! If your not following @DrEricDing I recommend his graphs and charts. Top notch info.
I think measles is the only thing that does that, because it has an R of about 30, so it really can expose everyone in a population. Doesn't last, of course. Herd immunity is only achieved via vaccine.
