have you ever seen an engineering decision so bad, that you start to wonder if it’s not a bad decision, but instead, actual sabotage?

Fun fact: "Nobody uses Bing" (a common thing I hear in my professional bubble) Bing has around 120+ million monthly unique users. Controls 36% of the Desktop search market (US) & still growing in other markets.

if you work on a team where your manager thinks they are the technical lead, or your director thinks they are the architect, consider switching teams, or maybe switching companies

i wrote a piece about a new tv show that has not just one but two female engineering leads working at a startup in san francisco. my cynicism of the dialog aside, it’s legit that theyre showcasing women in engr roles on prime time tv.

Recent PM interview question I've been using: You're the PM at Netflix handling the home screen. How do you determine how shows get promoted editorially vs algorithmically recommended? Walk through metrics/principles/trade-offs and how it impacts various parts of the biz.

I was in a meeting yesterday and someone started talking to me about using kubernetes on hadoop. I almost had a stroke.

Helping people who are just starting out in tech is a great reminder that I too was once totally bewildered about where to start. A simple bit of advice pointing someone in a productive direction can really help someone who doesn't know which way to go.

could probably extend that philosophy to relationships beyond just product/customer being a great husband is just convincing your wife/partner to not divorce you, one day at a time

can’t wait until we all wear facial recognition-blocking masks and makeup and the cops switch to gait recognition and we all have to wear shoes with uneven soles to make every step we take unpredictable and ridiculous.

I guess netflix’s approach to sharing public viewership data is a kind of “algorithm” where the reward function is the stock price

interesting to consider the differences in what constitutes a “play” between public viewership data vs. internal signals, machine learning and/or algorithms

remember when facebook's video metrics were set up to be so badly skewed that an entire industry pivoted to prioritize facebook video, only to have the floor collapse underneath them because their strategies were based off of bad numbers? anyway, everything looks fine here
