Then is a take-home code test tailored to the role. Our tests are simple, we tell candidates 3 hours and ask when they want to start instead of a deadline. We also tell them we're not timing them, we're just giving a reference time. Candidates have taken 45 minutes to 8 hours.

FWIW many candidates have given us very positive feedback about our tests. I just don't believe you can gain an understanding of how someone codes by talking to them about it. A picture is worth a thousand words.

After that, it's in-person interviews and we try to keep it to a single half day block. Our company's at an awkward size where it would be weird if they didn't meet most of us. I will sometimes ask about their tech choices on the test but mostly it's just us getting to know them.
