The clips of Sudanese voters (and Bernie supporters) at the bilingual caucus excited and ready is so wonderful. I love these videos of local, grassroots, often thankless but so incredibly powerful, movement work. More please.

One more thought for now. This new writing on care work, past and present, even if it takes up a call for citation, must be done with ... care. And as readers, we need to look for citation by reading even more critically how a particular paper or book or talk was produced. Fin/

By which I mean that this is not abt citation in order to virtue signal, ‘recover,’ or even engage, but citation defined as an interrogation and remaking of raced and classed sets of political and economic relations, and being prepared for where that takes you or doesn’t. Ok fin/

This is what expanding the electorate looks like. They say it can’t be done, that working class people who don’t usually vote won’t ever vote, and that it’s not worth the effort to try and change that.

And her laugh is a reminder that their writings and work might not be in JSTOR, or google search, or archived. That’s on purpose - both bc these for-profit corps erase as much as they index, and bc discussions of care often were/are inextricable from broader radical movements.

Had the incredible honor of being one of Bernie's precinct captains at one of the five mosque caucus sites in Iowa!Palestinian, Nepali, Iranian, Somali & Iraqi communities, mostly all refugees, allowed us to win 7/9 delegates available. It's an experience I'll never forget. ❤️

Also, an elder for wages for house work movement, a dear mentor, told me she’s been fielding more and more interviews from academics who come to extract info but dont talk too much abt how they’ll offer support (“apart from writing in fancy places.”) She finds it hilarious. 😬🤣

Slapping on few endnotes and endless quotes is also not what I mean by citation, but rather writing that seriously theorises with (not on) this work, builds with well developed concepts and long histories. You’re already nabbing academic cred/capital, have decency/ethics to cite.

I’ve peer reviewed three papers in last year where I’ve had to point this out, and just last term an up and coming prized (white) feminist scholar gave a talk on wages for house work and care with minimal, ad hoc citation but lots of borrowing from earlier writers.

Muslim centers gave Bernie +5 SDEs, shaving a third of Pete Buttigieg’s lead! From Official results: Muslims at satellite district CD3 gave 5+ state delegate equivalents and 400+ votes to Sanders and ZERO to Pete

Apropos of my earlier tweet, as “care work” enters more mainstream political thought esp in academy I hope our citational practices reflect understanding of many decades of theory and political work by mostly black radical feminists, scholars, organisers and artists alike.

I might be missing it but has Bernie ever responded to a question concerning his vote in support of the 1998 Iraq Liberation Act?

The immensely talented Egyptian actress Nadia Lotfy has died. I've never seen these images of her in Lebanon, bidding goodbye to PLO fighters during their expulsion in 1982. Incredible.

And Bernie says he’s pro-Palestinian AND pro-Israel. For a century Palestinian-Americans (some of whom are Muslim) have had to swallow their dignity and vote “pragmatically.” Someone comes along and calls them human, and she resents them for being a touch more enthused? 🤡

Also, two last notes: I think I could make a strong case that a lot of this comes from a resentment of working class Muslims (and Arabs) by newly professional gatekeepers. She may say it vulgarly but variations on this have been around for around two decades.

And a good number of Arabs/Muslims broke entirely and voted for Nader bc of the near bipartisan consensus on Palestine/Israel. Whatever we may think of any of this, the idea that the Muslim vote is single-issue driven is inane.
