We will need concerted effort across industry, government, and civil society to even begin to address these challenges. Starting 5 years ago...
But all is not lost. People are starting to take this seriously. I'm writing about mitigations, first via Twitter (and my email list: http://list.aviv.me ); followed by whitepapers and articles. Always open to sharing drafts, feedback, and collaborations.
Information/media/web literacy is a critical part of our societal information immune system. I especially appreciate @holden's work in this space.
Unfortunately, even as work like his helps to mitigate the 2016 plague, we are about to get inundated by a new set of superbugs.
I fear this has already occurred. We have yet to know, how we are living in a Cartesian deception - or as brains in a vat - Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality comes along when more people are available to be duped and we are divided within and between civilisations!
For a veritable fake news crisis in our history, check out the relentlessly demonizing campaign for Prez in 1800 bet/ Jefferson and Adams. Puts things in some perspective. What's needed is education that equips a citizenry w/ a critical-skeptical lens, so it can see thru hogwash
We basically solved this problem for text in the 20th century. There may be a period of discomfort while fake audio and fake video are new, but the real solution is going to have to be source trustworthiness and fact checking. Am I missing something?
We solved this for text?! Source trustworthiness and fact checking are proving to be incredibly difficult. Efforts like @_trustproject are a start, but they demonstrate that we are nowhere near solving this, for now.
