The original article seemed great to me, and the edits were also great — they made the article stronger by providing key context, and provided a potential caveat for a claim from a source. There is growing distrust in media. Perhaps this approach can help. Who is doing it?

How it might help ideas, from simplest to craziest: 1) Post-hoc to inform editorial guidelines. 2) Occasionally pre-publication when timelines allow. 3) News orgs can provide tools for readers to suggest edits to stories post-publication. All build trust & build audiences.

At the very least, this is something that someone like this "Audience Development Editor" https://careerssearch.bbc.co.uk/jobs/job/Audience-Development-Editor-BBCcom/36064 … can facilitate. See what is annoying an audience and if there are reasonable changes that can address that (which fit well within what an ethical editor might ask).

Update: Follow-up experiment. I had another person who is not in the community being written about read the original article, and give their overall takeaways and impressions. Then I showed them the suggested edits to see if that changes their impression.

The reader thought that some edits were fine but unneeded — they provided context that reader already had. But one particular edit illustrated something more nuanced about the situation, and that did impact their takeaway from the article. The edit made the article better.

Wow. Nice idea! The trickiest part is getting anyone that despises an article to engage so actively with it. I’d guess that most would react by throwing up their hands and throwing in the towel.

I think that's possible and will happen a bit. But it can help to treat them like any other UX research participant. There are ways to address this (also, it helps if you're literally working with them to edit the article — it shows caring). More detail:https://twitter.com/metaviv/status/1224438579251671046 …
