A private equity company just bought the rights to the entire .ORG domain registry.
Oh, and @ICANN removed price caps, too.
If your nonprofit owns a .org domain, go extend your registration out to the maximum 10 years before prices skyrocket.https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/11/20/org_registry_sale_shambles/ …

The .ORG Heist: updated // with the enthusiasm of

#ICAdomains pointed out to the#ICANN Board in a specially-prepared FAQ on the proposed .org contract renewal on May 17, 2019, that ICANN did not in fact include a price hike notice provision for registrants. See https://tinyurl.com/wwsrz58 - 4 more replies

Firstly, thank you. This is a good piece. But I think there is a little bit more to the decision to award .ORG to ISOC back in the early 2000s. See RFC 2134 and ISOC's original mission; it was supposed to take over certain functions of the U.S. government re: Internet freedom. 1/

One reason for the creation of the ISOC was to mobilize resources in order to fund the IETF and other parts of the Internet's corre administrative infrastructure, since the U.S. government wanted to reduce its financial support. 2/

My guess is we, the people will just change the suffix to .NGO or something of the like. When the system fails us, we seem to always find a way.

NGO was part of the deal. It is going private as well.

It's a little hard to follow all the people involved (musical chairs, very apt heading!). For example, Beckstrom is mentioned only once and by last name -- who is that and what role were they in? Namecheap reaction is a little hard to parse, is the company "it" and ICANN "they"?
