Someone just used the weirdest argument on me. Roughly: "You can't criticize Y's argument against X, because Y might have a better alternative X', so you have to find all the alternatives to X and prove that they're all worse." (Y does not have an alternative.)

it's a form of the damn onus ball. "I claim X. You claim Y which contradicts X. Because of <some made of debate rule> my claim is special while yours is not, so the onus is on you to prove your claim. I, on the other hand, do not need to defend my claim."

*made up The "debate rules" always end up being essentially social in nature, and a-epistemological. It's an epistemological abdication of responsibility.
