Question I spend a lot of time thinking about: >70% of my friends are software engineers or data scientists. What would they have been doing if they were born 50 years earlier and where did all these other jobs go?

It partially depends on what you mean. They might have been e.g. doctors, but (I suspect) the number of doctors hasn't radically decreased, so maybe you're asking what the people who are doctors now but wouldn't have been before were doing?

best way to reformulate the question: what would you specifically be doing if you were born in 1940? what would i be doing if i were born in 1940?

I'm not sure I'd be in a similarly high percentile, but that may say more about me than about the processes you're interested in. But it does suggest a question related to yours, how much more (or less?) efficient is our meritocracy now?
