You shouldn't do it at all. Go into finance, work 35-40 hour weeks. Make twice as much. No waiting ten years for tenure.
The thing about doing science as a career is that if you aren't willing to put 60+ hour work weeks in, you shouldn't do it. You're doing a disservice to yourself, first and foremost, but you probably won't do great science. You probably won't anyway, but play the odds.

You should do it if you truly love your field so much that it's 60 hours of play instead of work. Lots of people delude themselves into thinking this is true for them. It usually isn't. Plus it's getting worse because more of that 60 hours is busy work. Less research (play).
