Overrated as in misunderstood to a criminal degree, certainly Derrida in that case.

It's "There is no outside text." The translation aimed at intelligibility but caused profound misunderstanding.
-
So what does 'There is no outside text' mean?
-
The original French is polysemous I believe, one meaning is that texts are hermetically sealed, there is no extro-text. So more or less the opposite of what is implied by the mistranslation.

Selected based on recurrent annoyances found on Twitter, these 4 are easily the most referenced in terms of being overrated.

agreed. but Lacan makes it a tough choice. the inclusion of Deleuze is outrageous, also.

My vote is for Lacan by a country mile. I included Deleuze 'cus I know a lot of people see him that way.

I saw a Lacanian psychoanalyst talk about cyborgs yesterday. In the Q&A she was praised for her "novel work" trying to read Lacan through Marx... My vote today is *not* without bias.

You forgot Nick Land
-
I also forgot Plant, Fisher, Foucault, Zizek, Baudrillard, Kant, German Idealists, Rand, Chomsky and Russell to name a few, but the 4 listed are most often _seen_ as overrated.
-
In this reader's opinion, none of the 4 listed are bullshit peddlars. All of them articulated thoughts which changed the shape of thinking, and all have to be dealt with in a legit way because of it
