Study of romanticism prefiguring psychoanalysis, features good readings of Derrida against Novalis. Provocative, has stuck with me years after readingpic.twitter.com/t6Ivj4KRae

One of the only books available on Jean Paul in English. Features summaries of all his novels and excerpts, biographical info. Useful book considering none of Jean Paul’s novels are available today except in 19th century editions from the heyday of his Victorian popularitypic.twitter.com/bLjcCZtMmo
I was surprised to find this one existed, considering little of Moritz is translated. This is a must read compliment to Anton Reiser that seeks to continue the story and exposes the pretty gruesome realities of life as a teacher during the erapic.twitter.com/M6NtxpvK9v
Tieck was a young upstart against Goethe not widely remembered today except for his fairy tales translated by Carlyle. He had a long career though and this bio takes you through later romanticism and many of its lesser known works and authors. Very solidpic.twitter.com/XnMmpsKS77
By the translator of Meister in the Princeton edition. This includes everything Goethe ever said about the novel. Looks at all the novels Goethe read. Discusses his composition process. Weak on literary theory, but contains lots of great info. A good companion to his novelspic.twitter.com/PZCGh7mnGM
One of the best books, an introduction to Kant’s opponents and rivals and the controversies that surrounded the reception of the critical philosophy. Covers Hamann, Herder, Jacobi, Reinhold, Maimon and others. One of the books to read firstpic.twitter.com/xijcRIJc3o
There’s no general biography of Friedrich Schlegel in English, this is the closest you can get, his brother. Very hefty. Hefty. Covers largely unexplored areas like his work as a sanskrit scholar and pioneering orientalist. Much neededpic.twitter.com/WFaK88LzJ6
Best volume to own on Schlegel. Includes his novel, all his aphorisms, some essays like on Irony and a pretty in depth biographical introduction. Doesnt include the Meister review, Letters on the Novel, On Greek Poetry, Kantian Writings. Incomplete, but single collectionpic.twitter.com/zDT5Tlmbh5
Some of the best and most perceptive criticism on the topic, you can tell from Theory of the Novel that Lukacs made heavy use of Romantic literary theory. One of my favorite literary critics tbh. This is a deep volume of essayspic.twitter.com/s1xNmAd77H
This is the best single volume introduction to the first critique. Walks you through the Architectonic. Defends Kant’s actual historical position. Allison is best on Kant imo.pic.twitter.com/cEctfaln5v
