If I was to read one Schopenhauer book?

Schopenhauer's work evolves very linearly. So either begin with On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason and then continue chronologically. Or read Essays and Aphorisms for a taster.

It's fine. Just disconnected from the whole. Which is somewhat frustrating as Schopenhauer's system - as seen by him at least - is complete.

Life is Suffering? And that 'positive' acts are in fact negative, as it is suffering which we are constantly pushing against? 3 options I guess: 1. Read his work through. 2. Secondary lit e.g. Bryan Magee -

3. Land's Thirst for Annihilation actually has some fairly good extrapolation on Schopenhauer, and - I imagine - is one of the few books to truly analyse it without a hint of humanization or 'it'll-all-be-ok-I-promise-ness'.
