I don't know. I chose to not meditate because I don't know. One thing that seems important: acceptance of whatever is there > forceful quieting or practice ignoring parts of self

Useful: The Dzogchen Master started Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche despite having spent over twenty years in retreat himself, made no effort to try to coerce or even nudge his son Mingyur Rinpoche to meditate. When his son asked him willingly for instructions, he was very happy though.

That is; I believe the problem has nothing to do with meditation but to do with "making kids do things" - It seems renowned lamas are well aware that you can't coerce people into liberation.
