I'm curious about situations like "what if everyone in the band had been convicted for a violent crime 5 years ago." Sometimes this feels like a positive redemption story and sometimes the opposite

A crux for me is if the art production causes additional harm A: they're abusive specifically in making the art B: they're generically abusive across the board A makes me like the art less B makes me appreciate that their lame existence has at least provided one good thing

It would depend on exactly what they did. This has happened already with some musicians and other artists. Listening to the music or watching the movie always reminds me of the bad behavior and reduces the enjoyment to a degree that I might actually abandon the work entirely.

It would slightly decrease my enjoyment of the music, almost not at all, but it would definitely impact my conception of the band itself, any worldview they promote, etc. On the other hand it would be almost impossible for me to learn this, because I don't trust rumors.

Music can be beautiful and important and have a dark valence. Makes me think of The Wall, and integrating shadow sides, and to the extent I resonate with such music it's better to not shut myself out.

That being said, I'll stop being publically appreciative, which does reduce the enjoyment factor, and often starts a slow fade into personal irrelevance.
