Corollary: When there is a sudden, real jump in growth, that's generally when the top layer of ego / self / identity has a lag in what is outwardly presented. The growth has been happening, its expression is what is irregular.

IME, this is true and false. Absolutely the way to plan and proceed. Experientially, growth rarely feels like progress. You slog through the plan, which rarely feels like progress. When you finally realize the progress you have made, it feels like you jumped a level
