In my lifetime in America, I've never experienced a large scale shortage of a necessary good. This is crazy. Current surplus is so high I can barely imagine what actual scarcity would look like.

I would feel appreciation right now, if this weren't so mindboggling. Really? All my life, no shortages. Of anything.

Agreed, it definitely can break. The just-in-time model has drawbacks. Grocery stories only hold about 3 days supply of food. If something prevented the trucks from coming, such as a disaster scenario (i.e. Katrina), the streets will look like The Walking Dead real quick.
