How unaffected someone is by extreme mental states (drugs, stress, fatigue) is a good indicator of how efficient their mental machinery is. There are 1000 ways to break a Rube Goldberg machine. A mechanism in a single piece is more resilient.

The easiest way to push through pain is not to notice it. Developing a deep habit of not noticing pain brings many problems, in my experience.

That's true! In the OP I was more thinking of the contrast between a person that can only talk and socialize when 100% healthy and sober, vs someone who can chat up a storm on acid or half asleep.
