Many people have a set of rules for themselves. When possible, it is good to start with descriptive rules rather than prescriptive ones. Upholding prescriptive rules takes constant energy. People with many of these rules fear losing control or being otherwise compromised.

Breaking up errors by situation allows situational attribution. If I eat chicken today I might be at risk of eating chicken tomorrow for the same reason so wouldn't break up rules by day, but I'm not at risk of eating dogs tomorrow, so I can break that into a different situation.
