Many people have a set of rules for themselves. When possible, it is good to start with descriptive rules rather than prescriptive ones. Upholding prescriptive rules takes constant energy. People with many of these rules fear losing control or being otherwise compromised.

Another thing to try is to drop these constraints that feel necessary, and... just see what happens. Depending on the rule and context, you might find it's ok! You'll save energy and have more freedom of action.

Breaking 1 big rule into many small rules helps avoid cascading failure. If someone follows the rule "I don't eat pork or chicken" and eats pork once, they might give up. If they reframe it as "I don't eat pork" and "I don't eat chicken," they can better recover from the lapse.

This seems correct. Should be applied dynamically of course. I've had the experience of rules that were once low-energy becoming active expenditures. People and their circumstances change.
