Many people have a set of rules for themselves. When possible, it is good to start with descriptive rules rather than prescriptive ones. Upholding prescriptive rules takes constant energy. People with many of these rules fear losing control or being otherwise compromised.

Example: I notice that I rarely eat pork and chicken. When I do, I don't feel good about it. Turning this into the rule "I don't eat pork or chicken" is simple. Done. That's the type of rule I predict people being able to uphold in the long run.

Another thing to try is to drop these constraints that feel necessary, and... just see what happens. Depending on the rule and context, you might find it's ok! You'll save energy and have more freedom of action.
