Descriptive rules describe the current, low-energy state. Turning that into a prescriptive rule means deciding to uphold that state. This is more sustainable in the long run.

Example: I notice that I rarely eat pork and chicken. When I do, I don't feel good about it. Turning this into the rule "I don't eat pork or chicken" is simple. Done. That's the type of rule I predict people being able to uphold in the long run.

Another thing to try is to drop these constraints that feel necessary, and... just see what happens. Depending on the rule and context, you might find it's ok! You'll save energy and have more freedom of action.
