  2. The Olmec made use of large basalt columns in multiple ways, including this tomb made of basalt columns. Two skeletons were found within this tomb, covered in a red dust (likely cinnabar) and surrounded by offerings of figurines and shells.

  3. This large mosaic mask was unearthed at the Olmec site of La Venta. It was part of a buried offering of multiple layers of greenstone, jade and other stones arrayed to created designs such as this. It is currently on display at the Parque-Museo La Venta in Villahermosa, Tabasco.

  4. These “twins” were found at the site of Los Azuzules, an Olmec site near Laguna de los Cerros, Mexico. They were found facing a matching set of “twin” jaguars. Most recently, they were on display at the Museo Nacional de Antropología in the exhibition “Golfo.”

  6. Masks were made by the people of Teotihuacan and the Olmec out of greenstone. A mask similar to this one was found incised with Isthmian script, and helped contribute to a scholarly debate about whether or not Isthmian script had been deciphered. Read more on the blog!

  8. This small greenstone figurine was found by a farmer tilling his land in San Andres Tuxtla, Mexico. It shows a figure that is part-human, part-bird, likely a duck. This unusual figure is also incised with Isthmian script, the subject of this week’s post! (Link in bio)
