We are gearing up to launching our virtual seminar series in Machine Learning in Medicine - aiming to minimize carbon footprint + speaker burden. Sending out speaker invitations shortly. Will announce line-up in real time. Watch this space and spread the word.

This is why we need to rethink our approach to AI. Blind faith in data-driven methods is suffocating research, depleting resources, and killing the planet. I know Google is supposedly carbon-neutral, but just imagine what else we could have used this energy for.

Generative models are invaluable tools for robust learning, causal inference, domain adaptation, and data efficiency. Ie, all the things that discriminative models are bad at.

Roughly $38,000 USD/year before tax for a PhD at MIT (NSF Fellow), but my biweekly paycheck totals to more than that because MIT has PIs pay their students the stipend + tuition + fees, and then the students pay back the tuition/fees on an installment plan.

This 👇 is unfortunately not unusual in today’s scientific publishing. will strive to make the review processs as efficient, constructive and pain-free as possible.

One of the best parts of my job is to receive good news from previous students. I just did and it made my day.

What makes the post-2012 machine learning wave different from previous ones is its ambition. Never before have we really attempted to create intelligent systems with brute force reliance on data. This dream, however, has now become ML's biggest liability.

Due to many requests, and to accommodate religious and national holidays that came to our attention, we are re-opening the paper registration until Tuesday January 28th, 23:59, AoE time.
