You don’t need to go to small towns in economic despair to find his supporters. You can go to Staten Island, Jacksonville, OKC and Fort Worth. It’s time for reporters to stop pretending you can only find one by driving into coal country and sharing feelings over a banjo sesh.

As much as I’ve enjoyed (jk) these journalists helicoptering into small towns and being shocked they never stopped saying merry Christmas and still support a guy that’s promised to bring their jobs back, it’s time to move on.

Small towns in economic despair should be covered. They have structural issues that deserve attention and thoughtful journalism. They do not need more thoughtless coverage rehashing the 2016 vote.

I cannot shake the feeling that, at their core, these articles are exploitative. Reporters land in small towns they've never spent time in, talk to people who would self describe as being at the end of their rope, and then the tone is, "Tisk tisk. You're a dummy."

These articles aren't for the people living in these towns. They are poverty porn, to be read by the people that think they are stupid and wrong.

If these journalists cared about the plight of these people, they'd write about rural America's crap healthcare, dwindling resources for schools, trade agreements that make it difficult to keep a job in manufacturing or agriculture. They don't. They write about their 2016 vote.

Tired of: "Let's go to Appalachia and cover miners and diners, or even better: miners IN diners."
