The problem with the analogy is that Sessions’s friends, Alabama voters, actually sided with Trump in the breakup. He can’t win an election as a Republican running against Trump in Alabama. The politically expedient thing is to pretend to still be best friends after the dumping.

You’re using logic and rationality, and when has that ever worked to clean up a relationship? Sessions landed his dream job as AG. He didn’t get to leave on his own terms, which he could’ve done as Judiciary Chair in the Senate. He wants to prove he’s still wanted.
