The problem with the analogy is that Sessions’s friends, Alabama voters, actually sided with Trump in the breakup. He can’t win an election as a Republican running against Trump in Alabama. The politically expedient thing is to pretend to still be best friends after the dumping.
An imperfect analogy: Say Sessions and Trump were dating. They had a dramatic, tumultuous relationship, and one said some terrible things about the other -- called him dumb and 'Mr Magoo' -- then dumped him in a public and messy way.
