America’s relationship with Japan has been key to keeping and maintaining Peace in the Pacific Theater since the end of WW II. Japan has been contributing to it’s defense and to the Security of the Region.
Trump travels to Japan today for the G20 and said Japan has an unfair defense treaty: "We have a treaty with Japan, if Japan is attacked, we will fight WW3 and go in and protect them...but if we're attacked Japan doesn't have to help us at all they can watch it on a Sony TV."
