I've never understood this: What does "locally installed software" mean when we talk about the "local" in e.g. "/usr/local/bin"?
I’ve never been 100% sure which of these it means: - distributed with the OS, or - automounted NFS volume

It used to be quite common to have machines with either root or /usr mounted from a central fileserver, so I'd guess the latter.

I guess the concept is that we're sort of pretending that things that come with the distro are sort of like NFS-mount things?
