I wrote a little note to a friend on the way that circulation math works in the magazine industry, then decided to make the math interactive, so I made up a little template syntax, but it was hard to process with regexp, and now I know about combinatorial parsers but have no app.

The essential thing to learn was that I was parsing an array of thingies but the parser expected me to be parsing a hierarchy of thingies.

Parsers belong to the class of "ooof, seems like an awful lot of code, I'll just use regexps," but it's really just lots of little functions, one per thingy, and you'll have to write all that code to deal with each thingy eventually, so I should remember not to be scared of them.
