The latest 8-Bit Guy video is about the Philips CD-i, and it's neat because it goes into the non-game parts of the system, too. Especially because of the photoCD!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxSCNhblC3g&t=0s …

It's amusing because he ran into exactly the same problem I did with my optical exhibit: You simply can't find PhotoCDs anymore! They're all full of people's personal photos so they don't show up on ebay, and they're old enough that everyone tossed them.pic.twitter.com/lQQ6LfIRcj

it's also impossible to search for them even if they WERE on ebay, because if you search "photo CD" you don't get the photo CD format, you get CD-ROMs with photos on them.pic.twitter.com/UFAUGeDMbS

The first time I did my optical exhibit I had to use this PhotoCD sampler, which similarly is a promotional pressed CD for the format, not a real PhotoCD.https://twitter.com/Foone/status/1000830612687675392 …

The other neat thing about PhotoCD that I was hoping he'd mention: The Philips CD-i doesn't actually support PhotoCD. No, really. It's advertised on the box and everything but the Philips CD-i has ZERO support for PhotoCD... but it works.

So how do PhotoCDs work on the CD-i if it has no support for it? Well... The Philips CD-i is also a game system, remember?

So Philips got Kodak to include CD-i binaries on every PhotoCD disc. So the CD-i doesn't need to support PhotoCD... because every PhotoCD is also a CD-i "game".pic.twitter.com/cdIb30f6pA
