Next week is Hack Week at PagerDuty, which means spending the week working on non-scheduled individual-interest stuff, AND fewer meetings as a result, and it’s gonna make the following (also WFH) week feel even weirder I think

(for clarity: I think Hack Week is awesome and a great response to what wasn’t working in monthly Hack Days, but also the timing makes it weeeiiiird)

I kinda feel like hack policies are the kind of thing that need a shake up every now and again, just cause not all hacks are equal

Yeah, there were so many hackday antipatterns showing up! I’m slightly concerned about the “i’m not telling you what my hackweek project is” stuff but wevs, some people don’t like rules 🤷‍♀️ I think this way gets us more stuff shipping, higher participation rates

I'd like to see planning in advance in the open with discussion that includes product and pushes projects towards things that are constructive, especially with an eye towards existing planned work and the expertise that has gone into detailing design requirements--but also 🤐

Guh, I just feel like it's weird to take a break and continue to work on product features. Usually I want to do anything but

(but that might just be based on past experience on whether you can actually ship the thing afterwards)

Yeah, there’s a lot of value in having working code and an MVP as a tool for convincing in an org whose product decisions tend to be on the conservative and long-term planned side. (and it’s a great opportunity to learn stuff you don’t work with day to day)

For some ideas, the act of trying to build something “like the thing,” is itself an enormous part of learning about the thing. This is why I embrace disposable experiments. There is no sunken cost fallacy to worry about if it was built to be thrown away.

I'm a fan of disposable experiments. I fear the times that a toothpick and masking tape experiment moves into production.

An MVP that runs against the design requirements of planned work is not a constructive collaborative effort, IMO, and could hamper future work if it is embraced despite sunken cost fallacy.

Oh totally! I get why other folks work on product stuff it's just never quite worked for me (maybe, if you're working on the same codebase and the refactoring you've been thinking about feels more urgent)
